The iPad is our target platform because it offers the best combination of features and installed base among the likely readership of Cinefex. We've even heard from people that they plan to acquire an iPad just to get this collection! However, due to the massive interest in the back catalogue, we are looking in to other options. We are taking all of your thoughts and suggestions seriously, and are currently looking into cross-platform compatible distribution. Please understand that a pledge during this Kickstarter campaign will give you access to classic Cinefex issues on the iPad, and not on any other future format. No, I'm sorry but there is no option to purchase individual issues or custom sets during our Kickstarter campaign.
Once the the Cinefex Classic Collection is available on in the AppStore in January 2014, you will have the opportunity to purchase individual issues for $4.99 each. You can however add up the total amount of each collection that you wish to receive, and pledge at that level.
After the project is successfully funded, we will give you the opportunity to specify your order when we send out a survey to collect your information.
Description Carry the entire history of modern visual effects with you on your iPad. For more than 35 years, Cinefex has been taking readers behind the scenes for an exclusive look at the visual magic behind many of the most popular and enduring movies of all time. The Cinefex iPad edition is an enhanced version of our print magazine. Every issue in the Classic Collection has been digitally restored and image-enhanced, every article viewable in its original 'print' format or in a new e-friendly format with customizable type, image galleries, bookmarking and other features. Best of all, the collection is fully searchable, making this an invaluable tool for researchers or effects artists — or anyone who wants to delve into our 30 years of unsurpassed visual effects coverage. All issues since 127 have been designed specifically for the iPad.
Each issue contains all of the articles and ads appearing in our print edition, but includes nearly twice as many photographs, many of which are interactive, allowing readers to toggle back and forth between plates and comps and elements to see how visual effects shots come together. Whenever possible, we also incorporate video clips and breakdowns of effects shots and sequences. Single issues and annual (6-issue) subscriptions can be purchased directly through the Cinefex app.

About The Optical Host Mark Boszko takes you on a journey back through the annals of Cinefex magazine, talking about the movies and topics they covered 30+ years ago. We talk to people involved in the films, people who make movies, and people who love movies, and have a fun time doing it.
Cinefex, the quarterly magazine devoted to motion picture visual effects, announced recently that it has begun publishing an iPad edition of its popular film journal. More than a year in development, the Cinefex iPad edition is an enhanced version of the print magazine, designed and formatted specifically for the world’s most popular tablet computer. It contains all of the articles, photographs and ads appearing in the Cinefex print edition, but is more expansive - and experiential.
Says Cinefex publisher Don Shay: “I can’t think of another publication whose subject matter is better suited to iPad presentation that Cinefex. To my mind, it’s the most exciting thing to happen to the magazine since our first print edition, back in 1980. With nearly twice as many photos as our print edition, many of them interactive, and with video reels and breakdowns of specific effects shots and sequences allowing readers to see exactly how visual effects come together, I think it’s going to be quite a revelation.” The app itself is a free download, available in Apple’s App Store. So, too, is the first Cinefex iPad issue (#127).
Subsequent issues (#128-130) can be purchased for $4.99 each, with four-issue subscriptions available for $18.99. Future issues – including #131, due out in mid-September, and featuring in-depth coverage of The Dark Knight Rises - will be released quarterly to coincide with the publication of the print edition. In the coming year, look for Cinefex to also introduce iPad reproductions of all of its back issues – including many that are currently out of print.
